The Safety of Dermal Fillers

Dermal fillers have soared to popularity and wider awareness over the past few years. With television personalities and celebrities alike opening up about their treatments, they have become an easily accessible solution to lost facial volume or plumper lips. However, some people still think there are some unanswered questions surrounding dermal fillers, including are dermal fillers safe? The short answer is yes, when performed by qualified hands. Let’s explore the safety of dermal fillers including what you should know before booking your first treatment.

What are dermal fillers made of?

To really explore the safety of dermal fillers, it’s only natural that we begin with what they’re made of. After all, this treatment involves introducing a substance to your body and skin tissue, so it’s vital that it’s at least compatible! Dermal fillers are made from a gel-like substance that closely resembles a naturally occurring bodily sugar, known as hyaluronic acid. This sugar is essential to skin laxity, volume, and firmness, so emulating it within the filler itself provides effective results. Because fillers resemble this bodily sugar, the skin accepts it with very little complaint.

Are dermal fillers permanent or temporary?

Before the popularity and comparable safety of temporary dermal fillers, there were permanent fillers available. These permanent facial fillers use materials such as silicon to plump areas such as the lips, cheeks, and chin, but they aren’t widely used in the UK anymore. A lot of aesthetic professionals, including Cosmeteir, purposefully avoid their use because of their unpredictability, risks associated, and non-adjustable nature. One of the huge benefits of temporary dermal fillers is that they dissolve naturally within the skin but can also be dissolved with an in-clinic treatment or added to, enhancing your results. In other words, your results are buildable and breakdownable. This means we can control your results by adding or taking away volume. Permanent fillers earned their reputation through their complications in altering or removing them, whereas temporary dermal fillers remain effective and reliable.

Can dermal filler be undone?

The benefit of dermal fillers being naturally compatible with the body is that they are also naturally broken down by the body. Hyaluronic acid (HA) fillers are biodegradable, so they are naturally dissolved and flushed away by the body. If you find that dermal fillers aren’t for you after your treatment, they are easily dissolved using another safe injection that speeds up the body’s breakdown processes. This ‘reversal’ can be achieved in around 1-2 days after the injection.

Dermal filler side effects

Temporary dermal fillers are very safe for use within the skin and areas of the face, but they do come with some side effects. These side effects are natural and to be somewhat expected, though not everyone experiences them. Localised swelling, some redness, and slight bruising at the injection sites are all commonly occurring side effects of fillers. They should only last a few days, and bruising can be minimised by refraining from alcohol for 2 days either side of your treatment. Equally, swelling and redness can be managed with a cold compress or ice pack.

How to choose your injector

Choosing who performs your treatment is just as important to your safety as knowing the material being used. Always seek a trained aesthetic professional when considering injectable treatments, such as our own Dr Rachna Sharma. Medical professionals who are trained in both medicine and injectable aesthetics understand the safety and needs of both worlds, so combining them offers the best outcome for you.

I would urge anybody thinking about having fillers or botox to speak to Rachna.  From the initial consultation to the aftercare the whole experience was excellent.  I have had a follow up consultation to see if I am happy with the results and I definitely am and am so pleased with the whole process and results.
